Scotiabank Feast of Fortune gala aims to bring new digital mammography machine to Mount Saint Joseph Hospital

January 5th, 2018

This year, Scotiabank Feast of Fortune will touch many of us—maybe even all of us—as the gala event’s fundraising focus involves breast cancer.

Through personal experience, family or friends, colleagues or acquaintances, breast cancer is close to us all. Fortunately, it’s a battle we’re winning. Yet, it’s a battle we must keep fighting.

The best way to help is to provide our health care professionals with the best tools and the best equipment, which is the Scotiabank Feast of Fortune goal this year: to purchase urgently needed equipment for Mount Saint Joseph Hospital.

This year, Feast of Fortune donations will go toward a state-of-the-art mammography machine that has a new technology called “tomosynthesis,” which creates a 3-D image. Tomosynthesis has been hailed as a breakthrough in breast cancer detection as it can see through denser breast tissue, which has long been a challenge for traditional mammography. This means better breast cancer detection.

And many will benefit: last year, 15,000 breast imaging studies were conducted at MSJ.

The medical experts who will use this equipment say it best:

“Mammography is the cornerstone of breast cancer detection,” says Mount Saint Joseph radiologist Dr. Amie Padilla-Thornton. “Tomosynthesis represents an advance in breast imaging. It is an invaluable imaging tool for detecting breast cancers and other high risk lesions. It improves diagnostic accuracy, helps us further characterize findings, and problem solve challenging cases.”

The Providence Breast Centre, located at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, supports approximately 20% of breast cancer patients in B.C. The centre provides a full continuum of care including screening, diagnosis, and surgery, all in one location, and operates the largest breast reconstruction program in the province.

What is truly inspiring about this year’s Scotiabank Feast of Fortune? The older machine this new one will replace was purchased with funds raised at the inaugural Feast of Fortune event ten years ago, in 2008. This shows how gifts from our community contribute to excellence at MSJ; and how we can come together again to ensure this excellence continues by having the best technology for patients.

The Scotiabank Feast of Fortune takes place Saturday, February 3, at the JW Marriot Parq in Vancouver. Want to be a part of this wonderful night? There are still tickets available and you can buy them here.

Will you help bring this new breast cancer detection technology to MSJ? You can make your helping gift right now.
