All-star ensemble celebrates mental health and St. Paul’s Hospital at Brilliant! A Show of Love for Mental Health

August 21st, 2014

VANCOUVER, BC, AUGUST 20, 2014 – An all-star cast of local designers, stylists and make-up artists will show their love for St. Paul’s in front of an expected sold-out crowd at the Commodore Ballroom (868 Granville Street) on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at 7 p.m.

The occasion is Brilliant! A Show of Love for Mental Health, an annual fundraiser benefiting St. Paul’s Foundation that will take guests on a 90-minute journey around the world with its theme of “inclusion” this year.

“The show was inspired by the inclusive nature of St. Paul’s, how they don’t discriminate and accept all who walk through their doors,” explains Dean Thullner, producer for Brilliant! and former patient at St. Paul’s. “Expect a spectacular evening with global influences, focused on celebrating different cultural backgrounds and regions, including Canada, Norway, United Kingdom, France, India, Japan and the Middle East.”

The Brilliant! team is composed of more than 300 volunteers and performers, all in the fashion, make-up and the hair styling industries. StyleByDona is orchestrating the contributions of this year’s many notable designers, who include Kim Cathers, Stephanie Hung, Jennifer Kappler, Jason Matlo, Trisha Rampersad and Blair Shapera. Blanche Macdonald Centre alumni and current students are also participating.

“Brilliant! is unlike any fundraiser you’ve ever been to,” says Dick Vollet, President and CEO of St. Paul’s Foundation. “We are fortunate to have these dedicated, talented and giving volunteers putting on this extravagant show to help those coming to St. Paul’s for mental health support.”

Proceeds from Brilliant! will support the needs of mental health patients at St. Paul’s, beginning with the most pressing issues that may bring them to our Emergency Department for care. Those coming to St. Paul’s for help include white collar executives, blue collar workers and the SAMI (Severe Addiction and/or Mental Illness) population in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. One in five Canadians will experience mental illness at some point in their lives.
