A's Journey

I am 33 years old and a heart transplant survivor. It all started 4 years ago in 2018, when i had a stroke and a bloodclot in my brain. This happened while I was living in Calgary away from my family. I was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure.

The following year, the doctors told me I needed to get an ICD (cardiovascular implantable device), which took some adjusting. About 2 years later, I decided to move back home to Vancouver. I thought it would be best to be closer to my family, to have their support, as my heart condition worsened.

On Feb 3rd 2022, I went for a follow-up appointment for my biopsy. I told the doctor I was feeling some anxiety and pressure on my chest. What was supposed to be a follow up appointment, became my surgery for my LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) and a month at the hospital. I had the LVAD for 5 months and it was the hardest thing I have ever been through in my life.

On Aug 2 of this year, I got the call that they had a heart for me. It ended up not being a good match, but I still didn't lose hope. A few days later on Aug 5, I got the call again and they said they had a heart and it turned out to be match. I stayed in the hospital for 11 days to recover.

After being touched by the exceptional services and the dedication that the heart transplant clinic at St. Paul's provided, I would like to give back to this wonderful team, and show my gratitude for everything they have done for me!

Getting another chance at life is priceless and I am grateful that I am still alive today.

I wanted to share a little bit about my journey, and explain why this is important to me. I'd also like to inspire others to share their stories and know that they are not alone! I'd like to support to those who have gone through the same hurdles. If you have any questions or would like some support I'm here to give you support though my own experiences.

We would love your support. Please make a donation today!
