Bring Eureka moments to life
Right now, teams of scientists at PHC are in pursuit of some of the world’s most promising research in heart, lung, and critical care diseases. Among their initiatives:
- Curing sepsis (an infection that kills more people worldwide than cancer or heart disease)
- Restoring lung function in people with COPD
- Investigating a newly discovered immune pathway, which could slow the progression of ALS
- Developing ways to identify and treat the effects of long COVID
- Harnessing the promise of regenerative medicine. To cite one example, we are investigating how to restore hearing – not by mitigating the symptoms of hearing loss with hearing aids or cochlear implants, but by repairing the organ of hearing itself.
We are fortunate to have so many tenacious clinicians, researchers, and life science partners. In the last 130 years, we’ve pushed the boundaries to create treatments that become the gold standard worldwide.

For every donor dollar that is invested in supporting our leading research scientists, six times more funding is secured through competitive grants. Your donor dollars provide the best research environment that attracts the very best people, who then get grant funding – for the simple reason that they are the very best.

Transform BC into a destination for clinical trials
Clinical trials allow us to test therapies and figure out what works and what doesn’t. When our scientists partner with our large and diverse patient base, we can transition ideas from the lab to our patients more quickly.
And the sooner patients receive medicine, the faster they can begin to heal.
Only 25% of the clinical trials in Canada are currently happening in BC.
Your support will help us conduct more life-preserving trials in our own backyard, and discover new treatments at our Clinical Support and Research Centre.
After decades of living with cystic fibrosis, Kim Wood was able to breathe again after participating in a clinical trial at St. Paul’s for a new drug called Trikafta.
“There really are no words to really express my gratitude towards the research team. My life would have been so different had I not started on Trikafta,” she says. “My child’s life would have been very, very different. I never thought I was going to be able to be the kind of mom that I actually wanted to be.”

We’re on the cusp of a new age in research with the promise of not only treating life-threatening conditions, but discovering how to prevent them in the first place.

St. Paul’s Hospital has the largest biobank in western Canada, and is among the world’s largest for heart and lung tissue. We need more space to house them, and to expand our digital technology that allows us to collaborate globally.
