The 13th annual Scotiabank Feast of Fortune Gala hosted this evening by St. Paul’s Foundation welcomed more than 500 prominent guests from the Asian philanthropic community. More than $1 million was raised for critically important women’s health care equipment and research at Mount Saint Joseph (MSJ) and St. Paul’s hospitals.

“The philanthropy demonstrated this evening will make a major impact on the health of women from across BC,” said Shirley [Shiyi] Zhao, Scotiabank Feast of Fortune 2020 Gala Committee Co-Chair. “We’re so proud to support the largest breast reconstruction centre in the province, care for the most complex, high-risk pregnancies in BC, and transformative research into women’s heart health.”

This year, funds raised will support a SPY-PSI imaging system for Providence’s Breast Centre at MSJ; seven new wireless fetal heart monitors for St. Paul’s Maternity Centre; and Dr. Karin Humphries’ nationally recognized, life-saving research on women’s heart health at St. Paul’s Heart Centre.

“This funding makes such a difference to our patients,” said Dr. Janet Kow, Scotiabank Feast of Fortune 2020 Gala Committee Co-Chair. “Gifts made this evening will better equip our surgeons making critical decisions during mastectomies and breast reconstructions; help moms enjoy safer, more comfortable deliveries; and support Dr. Humphries’ research, transforming how we diagnose, treat, and care for women at risk for heart disease.”

Since its beginnings in 2008, Scotiabank Feast of Fortune galas –philanthropic celebrations of the Lunar New Year – have raised over $7.7 million for vital medical equipment purchases, including MSJ’s first digital mammography machine, an echocardiography machine, a 3D ultrasound breast scanner, a CT scanner, and surgical and emergency care equipment.

“Through personal experience, family or friends, women’s health is close to all of us,” said Dick Vollet, President and CEO, St. Paul’s Foundation. “We are so grateful to our generous attendees, sponsors, and volunteers – their contributions enable us to support our doctors and researchers with the best equipment and funding to further their life-saving work for patients and families across BC”
