Building for the Future

Leading by Example

For decades, St. Paul’s Foundation’s volunteer board of directors has helped drive innovation and care at St. Paul’s Hospital forward. Under their guidance, the Foundation has raised hundreds of millions to support all areas of care, research, education, and the patient experience. Our board members lead by example: they give generously of their time and expertise, connect the Foundation with new supporters in the community, and demonstrate through their own substantial donations that they believe deeply in the importance of St. Paul’s Hospital.

When it came to building the new St. Paul’s Hospital at the Jim Pattison Medical Centre, our board members stepped up once again, contributing millions to the campaign and inspiring others to give. Each of these volunteers has a long history of support for St. Paul’s Hospital and as business and community leaders:

Frank Anfield served on the Foundation’s board from 2007 to 2015 and has supported St. Paul’s Hospital for 20 years. The Frank and Marilyn Anfield Family gift of $1 million reflects the family’s appreciation for the hospital’s people and programs.

“St. Paul’s Hospital is a source of hope and compassion for countless BC families, including mine. I’m honoured to be able to support patient comfort and the staff at St. Paul’s Hospital, who carry out challenging work with an unbelievable level of commitment and caring.” – Frank Anfield

Paul Hollands joined the Foundation board in 2003 and served as vice-chair and chair. He chaired the Foundation’s Campaign Executive Committee, responsible for raising $225 million in support of the new hospital. Paul and his wife Maria Wiesner donated $1 million to the campaign.

“The new St. Paul’s Hospital is a game changer for the city of Vancouver, the province, and for health care. The opportunity to create tremendous innovation, coupled with St. Paul’s Hospital’s renowned compassionate care, is once in a lifetime. We are delighted to help it become a reality.” – Paul Hollands and Maria Wiesner

Board member Stuart Louie helped build momentum early in the campaign with a gift of $6.5 million from the London Drugs and Tong and Geraldine Louie Family foundations. The gift builds on more than 35 years of the Louie family’s commitment to St. Paul’s Hospital.

“Innovation and community involvement are high priorities for London Drugs and the Louie family. We have supported St. Paul’s Hospital for decades because it embodies exactly those priorities.” – Stuart Louie

John Montalbano, Foundation board chair since 2019, has been a board member since 2016 and served as vice-chair of the Campaign Executive Committee. John and Dana Montalbano gave $1 million.

“Strong health care systems create strong communities. We have absolute certainty that the new St. Paul’s Hospital will benefit all British Columbians and be central to the transformation of health care delivery in BC.” – John and Dana Montalbano

Ben Yeung, executive chair & CEO of Peterson Group, joined the Foundation board in 2020. In 2021 Peterson encouraged others to give to St. Paul’s Hospital by pledging to match donations to the new hospital up to $1 million.

“Peterson is committed to supporting initiatives that effect positive change in our communities. The new St. Paul’s Hospital will have a transformational impact on generations of British Columbians.” – Ben Yeung

We are grateful for the remarkable support shown by our visionary volunteer leadership. Through their long-term commitments of time and financial support, they are helping to transform health care delivery for all British Columbians, for generations to come.
