Funds raised by St. Paul’s Foundation donors to Purchase State‐of‐the‐Art Mammography Machine for Enhanced Breast Cancer Detection

The 11th annual Scotiabank Feast of Fortune gala hosted on February 3rd 2018 by St. Paul’s Foundation has raised $900,115 for urgently needed equipment for Mount Saint Joseph Hospital.

“Proceeds from the 2018 Scotiabank Feast of Fortune gala will directly touch many of us because our fundraising focus is breast cancer. Through personal experience, family or friends, colleagues or acquaintances, breast cancer is an issue close to us all,” said Sing Lim Yeo, gala founder and honourary chair 2018 Scotiabank Feast of Fortune committee. “The best way to help is to provide our doctors with the best tools and the best equipment available, and that is what we are aiming to do with this year’s gala.”

Funds raised will go towards the purchase of a state‐of‐the‐art mammography machine that harnesses a new technology called “tomosynthesis,” to create a 3‐D image. This technology has been hailed as a breakthrough in breast cancer detection as doctors can now see through denser breast tissue, which has long been a challenge for traditional mammography. The result is better cancer detection. This machine will contribute to high quality breast imaging for women at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, where over 15,000 breast imaging studies were performed last year.

The Providence Breast Centre at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital supports approximately 20 per cent of breast cancer patients in B.C. from Bella Coola, to Terrace, to Vancouver and everywhere in between. The Centre provides breast cancer patients with a full continuum of care including screening, diagnosis, and surgery, all in one location, and operates the largest breast reconstruction program in the province.

“Tonight, the Scotiabank Feast of Fortune gala celebrated over a decade of raising much-needed funding for Mount Saint Joseph Hospital,” says Dick Vollet, President and CEO, St. Paul’s Foundation. “We are so grateful to our generous attendees, sponsors , and volunteers – their contributions will allow us to provide patients with enhanced breast cancer detection.”
